Ideally, the voting records of our elected Maryland officials should be both widely publicized and easy to access. In fact, it is neither; instead taking much time and effort to locate. It’s no wonder, then, that few of us have any idea what our elected officials in Annapolis have voted for and voted against.
We at the Baltimore County Green Party feel that this information is crucial, and must be made easily available to the public. Thus, over the course of the 2002 General Assembly, we will be monitoring votes on key pieces of legislation. Viewing the outcome of these votes through the lens of the “ten key values” of the Green Party, we will be constructing a Green Legislative Scorecard. In effect, we will be grading our legislator’s performance in office. Together with an analysis of each legislator’s campaign finances, we hope that this information will aid the public in making informed decisions in subsequent elections.
